Bighorn Sheep

11. Bighorn Sheep

I was photographing with a macro lens, immersed in the small world, when I heard a rock tumble down a cliff across the valley. I looked up and saw a solitary sheep that had left the herd - seeking a tiny morsel of green vegetation in the middle of an almost vertical cliff wall.

I seized my longest telephoto lens and began to shoot traditional compositions. Suddenly I felt the tension of the scene I was looking at and photographing - the risk of losing one's life in order to obtain a culinary delight. To try and capture this tension, I changed the composition to place the sheep in the top centre. In this way I could portray the danger - the long drop below, which would most certainly result in death should it slip and fall.
